Kunal Kamra: Comedian hits back again with Political Sensitivities

Comedian Kunal Kamra, known for his politically charged stand-up performances that frequently spark controversy, has found himself in hot water once more. This time, his comments labelling Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde as a ‘traitor’ have stirred significant backlash.

Kamra’s remarks, delivered during his new comedy special ‘Naya Bharat’, have faced strong condemnation from Shiv Sena officials and various ministers in Maharashtra, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

After the controversy, Eknath Shinde’s youth faction of Shiv Sena, known as Yuva Sena, defaced the Habitat comedy venue where the show was recorded. Kamra, who was raised in Mumbai, frequently attracts controversy with his provocative comments directed at BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2017, he started his eponymous show ‘Shut Up Ya Kunal’, which featured him engaging in an informal discussion with politicians and activists from both ends of the spectrum.

The controversy began when Kamra performed a satirical song at Mumbai’s Habitat Comedy Club, indirectly targeting Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. The song labelled Shinde a “gaddar” (traitor) for his 2022 political shift. The performance, shared on social media, led to a backlash from Shinde’s supporters, who vandalized the comedy club. Over ten individuals were arrested, including Shiv Sena’s youth leader Rahul Kanal, and an FIR was filed against them for defamation and property damage.

Kamra defended his act, emphasizing the importance of political satire in a democratic society. He refused to apologize, citing threats and the need for police protection before he could appear for questioning. In a show of solidarity, he shared a photo of himself holding the Indian Constitution, underscoring his commitment to free speech.

This incident has drawn varied reactions. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, condemned Kamra’s act, calling for lessons on respect and investigating his motives. Actor Kangana Ranaut criticized Kamra, suggesting that comedy should not dishonour individuals or their achievements. Conversely, political strategist Prashant Kishor supported Kamra, asserting that his intentions were not malicious.
