Silver

Silver was discovered around 3000BC after the discovery of gold and copper. It is found deposited in the earth’s crust by volcanic or hydrothermal activity. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of copper,  zinc, gold and lead refining.

Silver Purity and its usage

We can use pure or fine silver for making jewelry but it is very difficult to work with it. Pure silver is used for silver-plating also.

To qualify silver as pure silver, the silver must make up at least 99.9 percent of the metal. It has a millesimal fineness of 999 which is also called as pure silver or three nines fine.

Usage of Silver

Earlier it was used as a medium of exchange and as a jewelry. In today’s world silver is used in nuclear reactors, medicine, semiconductors, water purification, wood preservatives LED chips, glass coatings, alloys, batteries, dentistry etc.

Current price if silver is approx. 100gm = 7180/- INR

925 Silver

925 Silver is known as Sterling Silver which is hypoallergenic, high-quality, safe and fashionable. Here, silver is mixed with other metals like copper, nickel or zinc to make it more durable alloy, as pure silver is too soft to be used in jewelry.

925 silver  = 92.5% pure silver + 7.5% additional metals (copper, nickel or zinc)

To mark it as a genuine silver, it is tamped with the number 925, usually in an inconspicuous  spot.

“925” is used as Hallmark to ensure that it is a sterling silver. Other hallmarks for sterling silver are STER, STG, S.S. and Sterling Silver.

Every country have there own standards and norms for the purity of silver in short “Sterling Silver” can vary as per country. Like in French standards are little higher than the International norms. In French purity of silver is (95%).
