Ukraine’s Unyielding Stand: Latest Developments in the Russo-Ukrainian War

As of June 2025, the Russo-Ukrainian War has entered a critical phase, marked by intensified military engagements and significant geopolitical shifts. Ukraine continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience in the face of escalating Russian aggression, while the international community grapples with the evolving dynamics of the conflict.

On June 10, 2025, Russia launched one of its most extensive air assaults on Kyiv in over three years of war. The attack involved 315 drones and seven missiles, targeting key infrastructure, including a maternity ward in Odesa and Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite Ukraine’s air defences intercepting 277 drones and all seven missiles, the strikes resulted in at least three civilian casualties and significant damage to residential areas.

This offensive is part of a broader strategy by Russia to weaken Ukraine’s morale and military capabilities. Over the past week, Russia has reportedly launched 1,451 drones and 78 missiles across Ukraine, underscoring the scale and persistence of the aerial bombardments.

On the ground, Russian forces have made significant territorial gains. The capture of Kostiantynivka in Sumy Oblast on June 2–3 marked a notable development, as it was the first verified Russian territorial gain in the region since the original incursion in January. This move places Russian forces approximately 20–25 kilometres from Sumy city, threatening key supply routes and increasing the risk of encirclement for Ukrainian defenders.

In Donetsk Oblast, Russian troops have advanced along the Pokrovsk–Toretsk–Kostiantynivka corridor, putting additional pressure on Ukrainian positions and supply lines. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces in maintaining control over its eastern territories.

In response to these challenges, Ukraine has launched Operation Spider’s Web, a covert drone attack targeting Russian airbases deep within Russian territory. The operation, executed by the Security Service of Ukraine on June 1, involved 117 drones and successfully struck multiple Russian airbases, including Olenya and Dyagilevo. The strikes resulted in the destruction of at least 13 Russian military aircraft, demonstrating Ukraine’s capability to conduct operations beyond its borders.

Internationally, Ukraine has garnered support from a coalition of nations committed to its sovereignty. The “Coalition of the Willing,” led by the United Kingdom and France, aims to provide security guarantees to Ukraine and facilitate peace negotiations with Russia. This coalition underscores the global commitment to upholding international law and supporting Ukraine in its defence efforts.

The Russo-Ukrainian War remains a complex and evolving conflict, with significant implications for regional stability and international relations. Ukraine’s steadfast defence, coupled with strategic operations and international support, continues to challenge Russian advances. As the situation develops, the global community watches closely, hopeful for a resolution that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and restores peace to the region.
